Artificial Reef Initiative
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
In collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, the Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), has invested approximately 3,000,000 SAR (USD $800,000) over the past three years in developing, and planting, and monitoring over 1,500 segments of artificial coral reef on the floor of the Red sea, north of the Port of Jeddah, north of Jeddah Port. Designed to simulate the existing coral reefs found in the Red Sea (home to the world’s longest reef eco-system), the pre-cast concrete structures were placed at selected locations in a process which was completed in June of 2018. Aquatic life, including key local fish populations and their supporting eco-systems dependent upon the coral reef environment, is a key element of the Saudi Governments Vision 2030 program.
